Health Department: Person Returning From Guinea Does Not Have Ebola

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A person who was not feeling well upon returning from the West African country of Guinea does not have the Ebola virus, officials said Sunday night.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said the person was experiencing illness upon returning Sunday afternoon, and was taken by FDNY ambulance to Bellevue Hospital Center, the department said.

The department said the patient did not have any known exposure to Ebola in Africa and the virus has was ruled out right away as a cause of the illness. The patient was being tested for other possible causes of illness, the department said.

The Ebola virus caused a crisis in West Africa and a worldwide scare last year.

In October of last year, Dr. Craig Spencer was diagnosed with Ebola in New York City and isolated. He later recovered.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Christie later issued a joint policy of quarantining those suspected of having direct contact with Ebola patients. The policy was criticized by health experts and federal officials who say it could discourage medical workers from traveling to Africa.
