Group Looks To Change Campaign Finance Rules In New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- According to the legislative director for New York's League of Women Voters, there's a lot of gray area when it comes to what candidates in the state can use campaign finances for.

"Tickets to the Super Bowl, tickets to Yankee Stadium," said Barbara Bartoletti.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, candidates can often use credit cards without itemizing expenses, which Bartoletti said leaves plenty of questions.

"Gee, isn't the campaign dollar supposed to be used to get out your campaign message? And not to augment your lifestyle?" she said.

The League of Women Voters would like to have excess campaign funds returned to donors or given to charity when someone is no longer a candidate, Smith reported.

With the legislative session just days from closing, it's something Bartoletti said they will look at for next year.
