Part Of Bainbridge Street Named Greenest Block In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A stretch of Bainbridge Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant has been named the greenest block in Brooklyn as part of the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens' annual contest.

Mark Fisher, with the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, said the trees on the block between Malcolm X Boulevard and Stuyvesant Avenue are just the start.

"Then they also have whiskey barrels that are filled with plants and then the stoops have all different kinds of containers with beautiful foliage or beautiful flowers on them, and then window boxes as well," he said.

Fisher told 1010 WINS the Bainbridge Street homeowners used very innovative ways to make their block greener.

"As you walk down this block, you walk by beautiful kinds of tree beds and all different colors of flowers, mostly annuals. They used some native plants as well," he said.

More than 200 blocks in over 25 neighborhoods competed in this year's contest.

The Fulton Area Business Alliance on Fulton Street between South Portland Avenue and South Oxford Street, Mid-Atlantic Block Association on Atlantic Avenue between Bond and Nevins streets, and Cortelyou Road Merchants Association on Cortelyou Road between Argyle and Westminster roads were named Brooklyn's greenest commercial blocks this year.

The greenest store front awards went to Rose Water Restaurant on Union Street and Thistle Hill Tavern on Seventh Avenue in Park Slope.
