Intern Helps Bring Free Self-Defense Classes To Greenburgh

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- In response to sexual assaults on college campuses, the town of Greenburgh this summer is offering free self-defense courses set up by a college intern.

Sophomore Emily Salwen wants young women to learn how to protect themselves through punching, kicking, confidence and awareness, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.

"Sexual assault prevention has become more of a national conversation, and I think that this is a really great way to protect women, to defend them, both physically and mentally," Salwen said.

For her internship with the town this summer, Salwen has organized free self-defense seminars. Over the next two Saturdays (July 25 and Aug. 1), participants with learn Krav Maga and receive tips from the police.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner is impressed. He wrote to the state Board of Regents recommending self-defense for all young people.

"It should be a requirement in all schools because I think it should be part of like the athletic program," he said.
