Green Bay Is Ready For Big Freeze At Lambeau Stadium

GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A deep freeze has settled over Wisconsin for the 49ers-Packers wild-card game.

It was 6 degrees about two hours before the game, with a wind chill of minus-11. Temperatures were expected to drop through the day.

As matter of fact the prediction is for windy conditions with a chance of flurries, with the wind chill dipping to possibly minus-50. The Niners beat the Packers 34-28 back on Sept. 8.

The game at 80,000-plus capacity Lambeau Field is sold out. But with the meat-locker conditions putting a damper on tailgating, many fans had to find other ways to celebrate before the game.

One group of bundled-up fans tailgated in front of an outdoor fire pit in a driveway. Another couple set up a hunting blind behind their pickup truck and cozied up beside a propane heater.

The coldest NFL game on record is the 1967 championship game, known as the "Ice Bowl" won by the Packers 21-17 over the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field on New Year's Eve. The temperature dipped to minus-13, and the wind chill that day was minus-48.

The city of Green Bay did avoid a TV blackout as the remainder of their tickets were purchased by banks and local broadcast affiliates.
