Green Acres Mall To Get $84M Shopping Center Next Door, 'Green Acres Commons'

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The owner of Long Island's Green Acres Mall plans a $84 million shopping center next door.

The Macerich Co. also plans to spend about $79 million to improve the existing mall in Valley Stream.

The new retail center will be renamed Green Acres Commons.

It will replace the Sunrise Multiplex Cinemas and feature big box retailers.

Newsday says the Santa Monica, California-based company was to submit an application this week to demolish the movie theater.

Work to the 1.7 million-square-foot mall is already underway. The mall will remain open during the renovation.
