Grand Central Terminal Hosts An Indoor Picnic

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A picnic in Grand Central Terminal?

The iconic transit hub's Vanderbilt Hall has been transformed into an indoor picnic space as part of a special promotion this week, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.

Astroturf has been installed, along with 15 picnic tables with red and white tablecloths. There are also live musical performances.

The event, called "Life's a Picnic in Grand Central," is being held through Friday.

"What we want to do is find more ways for the public to come in and really enjoy the beauty and the splendor of Grand Central Terminal," said Amy Scheer, Grand Central's marketing director.

Christine Spensier was among those who stopped in Monday.

"Just to be able to sit here and enjoy the architecture and listen to some good music and sit at this table is really enjoyable," she said.

A number of the terminal's vendors are set up at the picnic space.

"I would say it boosts more of our brand for this week," said Brian Zaro of Zaro's Bakery. "And you see a nice boost in revenue as well."
