Gov. Christie Tours Seaside Heights Boardwalk As Rebuilding Continues

NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork) -- Construction is underway to get the Jersey Shore ready for the summer after a fire that destroyed parts of the boardwalk in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park last fall.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, the sound of chain saws overpowered the crashing waves as construction crews worked on pilings for the rebuilt boardwalk.

"I'm going to be on top of this every week," said Gov. Chris Christie.

The governor was touring the site, which was left charred, blackened and destroyed last fall.

"It is still our goal to make sure this year, this summer is better than last summer was," Christie said.

"Don't be afraid to come to the Jersey Shore because we're open for business." Seaside Park Mayor Bob Matthies said.

Matthies said the Sawmill will be back, hoping for most of the boardwalk and temporary shops to be there as well.

"There will be an experience that people seek when they come to the shore in Seaside Park," he said.

Unfortunately the mayor said the Funtown Pier will take more time.
