Gender Equality Finally Reaches Google Emojis

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The 78% of women who are frequent users of emojis have been stuck using female emojis that do not properly represent women of today , according to a report in AdWeek.

Male emojis include police men and detectives while female emojis comprise a princess or dancer. In May, Google made a request of a new profession emoji set to help close the gender gap in the work place and promote female empowerment.

The proposal reads, "Isn't it time that emoji also reflect the reality that women play a key role in every walk of life and in every profession? Given the fact that women are the most frequent emoji users, and that they span a wide professional spectrum not yet reflected in current emoji, we want to help address this pressing matter of equality."

The Unicode Emoji Subcommittee recently approved 11 new emojis of men and women in a variety of professions. Of these include a coder, musician, doctor, farmer, and computer scientist. All of the new emoji professions will include both genders and all skin tones.

Also, 33 emojis that were previously only made for one sex will now be available for both male and female. This will allow you to select a female running, male cutting his hair, and female weightlifting- all emojis that were previously unisex.

The new emoji updates will help better represent the diverse world we live in by minimizing gender roles.
