Man Accused Of Stealing Money From Girl Scouts, Striking Chaperone In Face

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)--  A group of Girl Scouts was less than pleased after a man reportedly stole their money and fled the scene.

Nassau Police said the Girl Scouts, between the ages of 9 and 12, were running a pretty brisk business at Rockville Centre train station Thursday after selling about $100 worth of cookies in just an hour, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

Detectives said 34-year-old Michael Avelli, of Deer Park, approached the table and removed a box containing the cash.

An adult accompanying the girls chased after Avelli and grabbed him, but was struck in the face by the thief, police said. Avelli fled the scene without the box of money.

Police were able to track him down and made an arrest at his residence on Thursday afternoon. He has been charged with second-degree robbery.
