11-year-old girl struck and killed by school bus in Brooklyn
An 11-year-old girl died after being struck by a school bus in Brooklyn Thursday.
It happened around 3 p.m. at 23rd Avenue and Bath Avenue in Bath Beach.
Witnesses told police the child was crossing 23rd Avenue when she was struck by the school bus.
Police said the driver did not stay on the scene. It's unclear if the driver was aware that they had hit someone.
The girl was rushed to Maimonides Hospital, where she died from her injuries. Her identity has not yet been released.
Sen. Stephen Chan, who represents the district where the crash happened, told CBS News New York the bus was later located and the driver was being questioned.
Chan said he had seen video of the crash.
"What I did see is a school bus hit a young lady, and now she's dead, and the school bus kept going," he said. "Now, I've handled many of these cases myself. There's times when a truck or a bus really don't know that it hit somebody, but in this case, in my opinion, the school bus knew that he hit somebody."
No arrests have been made.
The NYPD Highway Accident Investigation Unit remains at the scene and is currently looking for surveillance footage of the incident from nearby homes and businesses.
