Connecticut Police Warn Residents Of Holiday Gas Station Scammers
HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Connecticut State Police are warning residents about a series of scams reported at service areas on I-95, I-84 and the Merritt Parkway.
According to police, the alleged scammers will target drivers at gas stations, claiming they forgot their wallet before asking for money to pay for gas, WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau reported.
"Some of them gave money away and actually saw the person drive away before getting gas, so they knew it was a scam," Connecticut State Trooper spokesman Tyler Wierden said.
According to Wierden, these scam artists usually don't push too hard, as they do not want to attract attention.
"I think you should trust your gut -- if it's a dark parking lot, a rest area and there's no one else around you -- you're approached by someone -- that's definitely a situation we would deem as dangerous," Wierden said.
Police say those who are approached should decline the request to give money, and call 911 if threatened.
