Gary Danielson On WFAN: Conference Championships Should Matter In Playoff Selection

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- College football's playoff selection process is flawed because it favors big-name programs, CBS Sports' Gary Danielson said Friday.

Speaking to WFAN's Mike Francesa, Danielson argued that conference championship games should carry more weight when choosing the four teams. Ohio State (11-1), which failed to reach the Big Ten title game, was selected for the playoffs while Big Ten champ Penn State (11-2) was left out.

"This is not a beauty contest," Danielson said. "These games have to be decided on the field. And if you're going to make these championship games irrelevant, then college football's in danger."

Danielson said Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany "should have been pounding the table saying, 'Listen, you can take Ohio State if you want after you take my champion of my conference."
