Police: Private Garbage Truck Hits, Kills Woman In Brooklyn

3199097NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 46-year-old woman using a walker was killed after being hit by a private garbage truck while crossing the street in Brooklyn, police said.

It happened just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday on Broadway between Ditmars Street and Willoughby Avenue in Bushwick.

Police said Alberta Bagu was trying to cross the street when she was hit by the truck. The driver of the truck then drove off without stopping, police said.

Bagu was found unconscious and unresponsive on the ground with severe head and body trauma, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's not right, he should come and turn himself in," Bagu's neighbor told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. "I feel very upset. If he hit somebody, he should have stopped."

The NYPD said it has since identified the truck that hit Bagu. After speaking with the driver, it is believed he did not know he hit anyone, CBS2's Meg Baker reported.

Neighbors said the block is dangerous to walk on.

"That intersection is out of control," said Paula Richardson.

Just like Bagu, Richardson uses a walker to get around her Bushwick neighborhood. She said she was shocked to hear of her neighbor's death.

"She was very friendly, very nice woman," she said.

"She lived in my building and these garbage trucks, they come flying around and they don't look out for nobody," said neighbor Carroll Gill.

"They are flying like it's a racetrack," said Richardson.

Police were seen early Thursday morning removing Bagu's walker from the scene.
