EULESS, Texas (CBSNewYork/CBSDFW.com) -- A funeral was to be held on Saturday for a former NYPD officer who was killed in a shooting in suburban Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas this week.

Euless, Texas police Officer David Hofer was shot Tuesday afternoon, along with a suspect, in a park near an elementary school.

NYPD officers from the 9th Precinct will attend the funeral, sources told CBS2. Hofer worked from the 9th Precinct in the East Village when he was with the NYPD.

Both the officer and suspect died at area hospitals. Hofer was in surgery at the time he died.

Euless Police Chief Mike Brown said suspect Jorge Gonzalez was apparently set on ambushing a police officer when he shot and killed Hofer. He said Gonzalez had multiple guns on him at the time.

Brown said Gonzalez broke into a nearby home, stole weapons and went to the park. He took cover in a ditch, CBS DFW reported.

Three officers showed up at the park. Brown said Officer Hofer saw movement, told the suspect to stand up, which he did. Gonzalez then started firing, ultimately killing Officer Hofer, CBS DFW reported.

Euless Mayor Linda Martin said Hofer was an "ambassador for the community," and received eight letters of commendation in his two years on the force.
