Funeral Held For Jersey City Woman Whose Disappearance Led To Discovery Of Human Remains On Long Island

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A graveside funeral service was held Thursday for a Jersey City woman whose disappearance led to a suspected serial killer's dumping ground on Long Island.

Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old escort, disappeared on May 1, 2010.

Her remains were found in a marsh on Oak Beach in December 2011.

Investigators then found the remains of 10 other women along Ocean Parkway. They suspect a serial killer is responsible, but don't believe Gilbert's death is linked to the others.

Gilbert's mother, Mari, and her attorney dispute police assertions that Gilbert's death was not connected to that of the other 10. Police theorized she may have drowned in a marsh.

Local funeral directors donated their services for the funeral.

Gilbert was buried in Amityville Cemetery.
