Francesa: 'Crisis Time Right Now' For Mets
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's a struggle for the New York Mets as the calendar approaches July.
Heading into Wednesday night's game with the NL East-leading Washington Nationals, the Mets are in third place – five games out of first. And it doesn't get any easier as the Chicago Cubs head into town for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
Mike Francesa didn't mince words about the state of the Mets.
"For the Mets, this is a crisis time right now, there's no question about it. The bottom line is everything is going wrong right now. There's not a lot to count on. They need guys to snap out of it, they need their good players to snap out of it, they need their pitchers to hold together through this … and try to see if they can keep their heads above water for a while until this thing starts to heal itself because it is getting ugly quickly for the Mets," Francesa said.
The Mets offense has been putrid, ranking 21st in slugging percentage, 26th in on base percentage, 28th in runs scored, and 30th in batting average.
Francesa said it's becoming a "very significant struggle for the Mets."
"The Mets could find themselves in a real bind if they don't send for some reinforcements and get a couple of breaks in terms of their health over the next couple of days," Francesa said, referring to the potential injury concerns of pitchers Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard.
