Following Sandy, 33 N.J. Gas Stations To Share Grant Money For Generators
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A group of 33 New Jersey gas stations on and near storm evacuation routes have been approved for grant money by the state to install backup power supplies.
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority said Thursday that 33 stations will share $1.8 million in grant money after completing the required environmental and design reviews. Twenty-eight of the stations will install permanent generators, while the others will use ``quick connect'' devices for mobile generators.
Gas stations were plagued by shortages and power problems in the wake of Superstorm Sandy two years ago. That led to the planned $7 million grant program.
The 22 gas stations on the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike and Atlantic City Expressway already have backup power systems.
In 2013, Teaneck officials said they wanted to avoid that type of mess in the event of another disaster like Sandy. The Township council proposed an ordinance that would force food retailers, gas stations, and senior and disabled housing facilities to install emergency generators.
