Truck Bringing Sharks To New York Aquarium Crashes In Florida; 1 Shark Dead

OAK HILL, Fla. (CBSNewYork) -- A semi-trailer truck transporting five sharks to the New York Aquarium at Coney Island crashed Wednesday while headed up Interstate 95 in Florida.

As reported by CBS affiliate WKMG-TV, Orlando, the Florida Highway Patrol reported that a tire on the truck – driven by Gerald Barnhart of Georgia – split open while Barnhart drove north on I-95 near Oak Hill in Volusia County, Florida.

The truck veered into the median of the highway and ended up along the tree line, WKMG reported. One of the aquarium tanks was damaged, the station reported.

One of the sharks was killed, the station reported. The other four survived, and were to be moved to another truck, WKMG reported.

The truck was owned by Dynasty Marine Transportation Inc., and was headed from Marathon, Florida to the aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn, the station reported.

The sharks that survived were to complete their trip to Brooklyn once workers from SeaWorld could transfer them safely to another tank, WKMG reported.

The driver and two passengers were uninjured, the station reported.
