Fleet Week Gets Underway As Ships Arrive In NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Fleet Week kicked off Wednesday in New York City as Navy and Coast Guard ships arrive in Manhattan.

More than 14 ships and 2,300 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members will take part in Fleet Week, which began with the Parade of Ships on the Hudson River.

For spectators there will be loads to see. There are lots of free interactive events for the public allowing you to tour many of the ships or see some Broadway performances.

There will also be a variety of special Fleet Week events on board the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum including a screening a "Top Gun" on the Intrepid flight deck and concerts on Pier 86.

The Shaffer's of Scotch Plains, N.J. came to see their grandson, a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy coming in on one of the academy's yard patrol boats.

"So excited, so proud of him," one family member said.
