New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement on the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania that claimed nearly 3,00 lives.

Cuomo says the monument will serve as an eternal reminder of the courage, sacrifice and bravery demonstrated by the first 9/11 responders, WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported.

"Especially the people we lost on 9/11 and the hundreds and hundreds of people who helped on 9/11 who've gotten sick since," Cuomo said.

The announcement came before Cuomo joined nearly 250 first responders on a motorcycle ride to Ground Zero in remembrance of the attacks.

The budget and timeline of the proposed project was not immediately specified.
