Firefighters Brave Smoke-Filled House To Save 6-Year-Old In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A firefighter raced into the second floor of a blazing Brooklyn home to save a small child trapped in a bedroom.
The fire broke out about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday in the home on Thomas S. Boyland Street in Brownsville, and was under control about 40 minutes later.
Lieutenant Robert Whelan says it was too smoky to see, so he had to keep one hand on the wall and feel around for any sign of life. He found the boy on the floor near the bed.
"I mean your heart drops a little bit but you're kind of just thinking about grabbing him and getting him out of there," Lt. Whelan told 1010 WINS reporter Sonia Rincon.
He says when he brought the child to his chest he could hear him give a little cough. He dashed out and the victim was whisked away by ambulance to a hospital. FDNY officials say the boy is in critical condition.
One other child was injured, but was not inside the building when firefighters arrived.
