Fire Rages On Garbage Barge In Hutchinson River

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A garbage barge full of crushed cars caught fire Wednesday afternoon on the Hutchinson River between the Bronx and Mount Vernon.

As Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2, the barge carrying crushed cars and scrap metal caught fire on the river around 5:45 p.m. Mount Vernon firefighters and the FDNY were both on the scene hosing down the flames.

The FDNY told WCBS 880 they are applying foam to contain the fire.

Traffic on nearby Boston Road/Route 1 and on the Hutchinson River Parkway was dragged into a jam by the fire, as drivers stopped to rubberneck and take photos.
