Fire Officials: Snow, Ice Possible Factor In Bronx Roof Collapse

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- No injuries have been reported following a partial roof collapse in the Bronx.

The collapse occurred just after 9 a.m. Wednesday at a 21/2-story building on University Avenue in the Kingsbridge section.

No one was home at the time of the incident and no passersby were hurt.

Fire officials believe snow and ice are at least partially to blame for the collapse, CBS 2's Elise Finch reported.

"There might've been a defect in the roof, normally this does not happen with this type of roof," said Fire Chief Thomas Reilly. "Something happened where it caused a catastrophic failure of the roof structure."

The building has been vacated and the buildings department will determine whether the home can be repaired or if it has to be demolished and rebuilt, Finch reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
