Fire Interrupts Birthday Party, Destroys New Jersey Home

MAHWAH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A police officer who was called to a New Jersey home due to a noisy birthday party wound up evacuating guests after a fire was discovered inside.

According to police in Mahwah, officer Travis Canning noticed smoke as he approached the house at around 2 a.m.

After calling the fire department, Canning entered the home to find two men throwing cups of water at a small fire in a first-floor room where a washer and dryer were located.

An evacuation order was given to several party guests who were in another part of the house, and everyone was able to escape safely, officials said. But the fire soon spread and eventually destroyed the home.

While the fire remains under investigation, authorities said it appears to have been accidental.
