Fire Guts Businesses, Apartments In Elizabeth, N.J.

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A popular block in downtown Elizabeth, New Jersey, caught fire Saturday night.

CBS2's Matt Kozar was on the scene where smoke and flames gutted a two-story structure with businesses on the ground level, apartments on the second level on Elizabeth Avenue.

"I'm so sad for everybody, not only for me," one local business owner said.

Police said there were no major injuries.

As Kozar reported, residents were able to escape on their own and firefighters did not need to make any rescues.

It is unknown how many people the fire displaced.

Firefighters are currently investigating the fire and there is no word yet on what caused it.
