Fire Breaks Out On Pedestrian Pier Along Hudson River In Edgewater

EDGEWATER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Investigators are trying to determine what ignited the flames on a pedestrian pier along the Hudson River in Edgewater.

The three-alarm fire broke out early Wednesday.

The 400-foot long pier was already engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene off River Road around midnight, CBS 2's Janelle Burrell reported.

Fire officials said the walkway had a new surface, but old wooden pilings supporting the structure helped fuel the flames.

Gusty winds and low tide hindered efforts to fight the fire.

"The wind was blowing and it just kept on lighting up," Fire Chief Tom Jacobson said. "We couldn't get underneath it where it was burning so we had to fight it from the top and cut holes to get down under and throw guys down almost in the water to reach underneath it."

It took firefighters about two hours to get the blaze under control, Burrell reported.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
