FDNY: Hazmat team shuts down acetylene leak at building on Madison Avenue

2 workers seriously injured after gas tank explodes in Midtown

NEW YORK -- A hazmat team was called to a building on Madison Avenue early Wednesday morning for a gas leak.

The FDNY responded around 6:30 a.m. to 550 Madison Avenue on the corner of East 55th Street in Manhattan.

Police sources told CBS New York building workers opened a cage where gas fuel tanks for welding and cutting torches were stored, when a buildup of gases caused an acetylene tank to explode.

Two workers were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries.

The FDNY's hazmat team secured the acetylene tank, and there was no structural damage.

Police sources said the cause appears to be accidental.
