Pedestrian Killed In Port Authority Bus Terminal Accident

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A fatal accident involving a bus and a pedestrian at the Port Authority Bus Terminal led to major delays during the Thursday evening rush.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said an ongoing police investigation was under way into a fatal bus accident inside the facility.

Port Authority Police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said the accident happened around 5 p.m. The man who was struck, who was 67 years old and from Garrison in Putnam County, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bus terminal staffers were working to set up alternate operations at the terminal, but customers were advised to look for other modes of transportation.

"We are not allowed to let anybody upstairs. They are slowly letting people up. The residual effects could be hours on end," a police officer told commuters at the bus terminal.

NJ TRANSIT cross-honored tickets for bus passengers who could take the train. The transit agency reported delays of up to 60 minutes.
