Family Says Volunteer Flight Group Has Been Integral In Son's Battle Against Cancer

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A young boy battling cancer made a symbolic and life saving journey on Sunday, when he took a special flight to Long Island.

Wes Pak, 8, comes to New York for treatment at Sloan-Kettering, but the 30 flights that he needed to take from Virginia would have been financially impossible for his family without help from a group called "Patient Airlift Services."

On Sunday, Wes was a passenger on one of the charity's flights.

"It's been a blessing. We wouldn't have been able to do it without them," Wes' mother said, "I believe they have a good part in why Wes is still here."

Wes' family found the group on Facebook.

Patient Airlift Services relies on volunteer pilots to provide free flights. They've carried out more than 5,000 of them.
