Family, Friends Come Together To Honor Cooper Stock, 9, Killed In UWS Crash
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Four months after a taxi cab crash killed a nine-year-old boy his family, friends, and even strangers have come together to honor his memory.
Cooper Stock lost his life when a cab hit him as walked hand in hand with his father on the Upper West Side, in January, CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported.
Now, friends have geared up to make sure the beloved boy will not be forgotten.
"We kind of took over and though, let's start a foundation to allow other kids to go to basketball camp that otherwise couldn't afford to. Cooper was a crazy basketball fanatic. That's all he wanted to do," friend Jackie Kern said.
On Sunday, dozens of cyclists pledged money to ride in Cooper's memory. The event has been dubbed 'Coops Hoops'.
Organizers have raised $20,000 to send about 40 underprivileged kids to Walt Frazier's Basketball Camp, it's the same camp that Cooper attended last summer.
"It feels good, in Cooper's memory, just to be able to do something that these other kids are going to benefit from," Soul Cycle instructor Julie Dermer said.
Cooper's father will be among those riding in Sunday night's Soul Cycle benefit.
