Fairfield Police Chief Back At Work Weeks After Suffering Head Injuries In Crash
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- The Fairfield Police Department chief is back on the job more than two weeks after a serious auto accident left him hospitalized with head injuries.
Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara was waiting for the light to change at Reef and Post roads on Oct. 21 when his unmarked police cruiser was rear-ended by an SUV.
"It was a really violent accident and I think what's significant is you wouldn't expect such a violent accident to have occurred at that location," MacNamara told WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau. "That's a very busy part of town."
MacNamara was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital; the SUV driver and her 7-month-old child were taken to Bridgeport Hospital.
MacNamara said while he suffered a significant head injury, he is grateful that the woman driving the SUV and her baby were not seriously hurt.
MacNamara also gives high marks to the first responders who came to his rescue.
"They're out there making an impact for people who really need it," MacNamara said. "At that point in my accident I kind of needed it, I needed a comfort. I needed the reassurances. I needed the convincing that I needed to go to the hospital."
The chief is now out of the hospital, but still dealing with the effects of his injuries.
"Sometimes headaches, sometimes a little head congestion or feeling a little out of it at times, but you know overall I felt it was time to come back to work and at least begin to contribute again and get back to some sort of normalcy," MacNamara told Schneidau.
