89-Year-Old Woman Escapes Injury After Tree Crashes Onto New Jersey Home
FAIR HAVEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A large tree crashed onto a home in New Jersey, narrowly missing a woman inside as she was laying in her bed.
The tree came down onto a one-story home on Katherine Street just after midnight Wednesday during a rain storm.
The woman, who lives alone in the home, miraculously was not hurt despite tree branches plummeting into her bedroom, landing around her bed, CBS2's Meg Baker reported.
"Thank heavens nobody was hurt," Fair Haven forester Bill Brooks said. "She was very lucky."
"Luckily the tree stopped just before it went through the ceiling. It went through the roof, and then the rafters in the ceiling actually stopped it just before it went in," Fair Haven Police Chief Joseph McGovern said.
Other homeowners in the tree-lined town are now being warned to get their property checked.
"Use a certified arborist, reputable tree companies and be aware of the fact even though a tree may be alive and fully leafed out, structurally it's more important to be aware of what's going on with roots," Brooks said.
He adds that the dry weather the area has had puts stress on trees that need water.
"The bottom of the tree belowground had root rot which you can never determine by inspecting it and between that and all the wind and the rain last night probably doubled the weight on the tree," tree expert Steve Becker said.
The homeowner is resting at a neighbor's home until her son arrives to pick her up, Baker reported.
Crews are working to break the tree down and get her home fixed.
