Extra Security Measures Taken At Starlight Park After Drownings
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- When two 13-year-old boys drowned in the Bronx River at Starlight Park last June, the "no swimming" signs were almost unnoticeable.
But now, large, bright red signs in English and Spanish have been posted, along with self-closing gates, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.
As D'Auria reported, after the drownings, the city's 55 boat launches were re-evaluated and the New York Parks Department has focused on the eight boat launches that lead to deep water.
New York Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver says they've gone to extra lengths to ensure safety.
"We're in the process of installing solar-powered emergency call boxes near the entrances to the launches and these will be in place over the next few weeks," he said.
Emily, 8, thinks the signs are a good idea because the river is not safe.
"It's deep and we can't swim here because we might drown," she said.
There are also bright orange life rings at the dock to be thrown to someone that can't swim in the event of a rescue.
A pastor who represents the boys' families said this is what they wanted.
"We're excited about it because the call hasn't fallen on deaf ears," the pastor said. "They're moving slow, but we're moving forward."
