Experts Weigh How To Replenish New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund has been running dry, and as of Monday, there was still no plan place to replenish it.
But as WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, the fund is also the source of continuing conversations.
The state's roads and bridges are crumbling, and officials warned that come July, there will be no money to fix them.
"Different types of revenue are being discussed, and it doesn't have to be necessarily a gas tax," said New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox.
Fox said he knows increasing the gas tax is an obvious solution, but in the past, Gov. Chris Christie has been resistant.
"The governor has said that everything is on the table to replenish the transportation trust fund," Fox said.
The 14.5 cents-per-gallon tax on gas in New Jersey is one of the lowest in the country.
