Ex-Rangers Captain Callahan Signs 6-Year Deal With Lightning
TAMPA, Fla. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Ryan Callahan to a six-year contract.
The team announced the move on Wednesday.
Tampa Bay pulled off a captain swap in March, acquiring Callahan from the New York Rangers along with a pair of draft picks for Martin St. Louis. Callahan was traded after failing to find middle ground with the Rangers, who were reportedly willing to spend $36 million over six years for his services.
His contract with the Lightning is worth $34.8 million, according to ESPN.
"I couldn't be happier to be part of the Tampa Bay Lightning organization for the next six years and I am excited for this new chapter of my career," Callahan said in a statement. "Tampa Bay has been a great place to live and play from the day I got there. As soon as the season ended I knew it was a place I wanted to be."
Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said Callahan is a "fierce competitor and outstanding leader who fits very well with our team."
Callahan, who has played in 470 games with the Lightning and Rangers, has 138 goals and 127 assists.
