Ex-Mayoral Hopeful Joe Lhota Named Chief Of Staff At NYU Langone Medical Center

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - The former GOP candidate for mayor of New York City has been appointed chief of staff at New York University's Langone Medical Center.

Joe Lhota's appointment was announced Friday. He will service as senior vice president, vice dean and chief of staff. Lhota lost the mayoral race in a landslide to Democrat Bill de Blasio.

NYU says Lhota will report to the dean and CEO. He will be responsible for managing activities at the academic medical center and will serve as an adviser on policy and management issues. He will also oversee the hospital's emergency preparedness and business plans.

Lhota replaces Anthony Shorris, who left to serve as a deputy mayor for de Blasio.

Lhota is a former head of the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority and deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani.

Meantime, de Blasio spent his first hours and days as the city's chief executive handling the snowstorm that dumped 6 inches in Central Park and nearly 11 inches in parts of Queens.
