Police: Woman Fatally Shoots Former Boyfriend During Break-In

MAHOPAC, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police say a man was fatally shot by his ex-girlfriend after he broke into her Mahopac, New York home.

The 50-year-old woman called police shortly after 2 a.m. and said her former boyfriend was trying to break into her home on Ann Road.

A tenant who lives in the basement also called 911 and reported seeing a man with a gun gain entry to the home, police said.

According to authorities, the woman was shot in the leg during a confrontation in which she wrestled the gun from him.

When officers arrived they found the woman bleeding from a gunshot wound and the man dead.

Carmel Police Chief Michael Cazzari told the The Journal News the woman, whose name is not being released due to the domestic violence nature of the incident, was defending herself and she will not be charged.

She was treated for the leg wound and released.

The identity of the 47-year-old ex-boyfriend was not released pending notification of his family.
