As Temperatures Soar, Connecticut Utility Working To Prevent Power Outages

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Summer isn't here yet, but the hot, humid weather is -- and Connecticut's major energy supplier has been working to prevent power outages.

In an effort to boost reliability, Eversource Energy has been installing new equipment and checking substations and power lines, WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

Mitch Gross, a spokesman for the utility, said customers, too, can help better manage their utility bills, especially those people who have air conditioning and ceiling fans.

"If you can set your thermostat just two degrees higher than normal on hot days and you use your ceiling fan, you can lower your air conditioning costs by up to 14 percent," Gross said.

Another tip: Clean or replace the air conditioning filter every three months or so. Dirty filters can make it harder for the cooler air to pass through.
