Man Found In Queens Six Weeks After Escaping Police Custody

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The six-week search for a man who escaped from police custody in Brooklyn is over.

Gerald Brooks, 39, had been on the run since Oct. 20. His hands were cuffed behind his back when he pushed a police officer to the ground in East New York and ran off, police said.

He was found Tuesday night in an apartment in Jamacia, Queens, and was taken back into custody, police confirmed to 1010 WINS. According to the Daily News, he tried to jump out of a window when officers barged into the apartment.

Brooks was originally wanted on a domestic violence complaint and has a lengthy arrest record.

He was the fifth prisoner to escape police custody since June.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton slammed the officers involved and said they're an embarrassment to themselves and the department.
