Englewood, N.J. Raises Tobacco Purchase Age To 21
ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Englewood, New Jersey became the first town in the state to raise the minimum age for buying tobacco products to 21.
The ordinance covers, cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes.
City Council President Lynne Algrant tells The Record newspaper she thinks the longer they can keep kids away from the products, the better off for everybody.
New Jersey raised the legal age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 19 in 2006.
A bill is making its way through the Legislature that would ban the sale of tobacco products and electronic smoking devices to anyone under 21.
In New York State, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signed into law a measure raising the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 19 to 21 earlier this year. It takes effect on Jan. 1.
New York City enacted a similar measure last year.
