Energy Efficient Project Cuts Grand Central Terminal Energy Use 30 Percent

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A four-year, $25 million effort has cut Grand Central Terminal's energy use by 30 percent.

As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, the upgrades also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 11,000 tons per year.

The New York Power Authority financed the energy-efficiency project and its president, Gil Quiniones, touted some of the fixes.

"We're talking about the mechanical systems, the cooling systems, the heating systems, the lighting systems and the control systems that make this great terminal work on a day-to-day basis," Quiniones said.

The improvements will also save $2.5 million a year and energy expenses and money from the savings will pay back the cost of the entire project with interest in 11 years.
