Education Secretary Miguel Cardona visits New York for closer look at learning programs

U.S. Education Secretary Cardona visits two NYC schools

NEW YORK - Educating children during a pandemic was the topic for U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona as he toured two New York City elementary schools Tuesday.

Cardona joined Queens Congresswoman Grace Meng during a school visit at P.S. 7 in Elmhurst. They met with students and parents for a discussion about the benefits of community schools.

Cardona says federal funding from the American Rescue Plan in 2021 provided $122 billion to help schools reopen.

"Not everyone voted for it, but thanks to Congresswoman Meng and others, all kids across the country can benefit from it. This is what it should be used for -- summer program to get kids caught up, to help them acclimate back with school," he said.

Cardona and Rep. Nydia Velasquez later toured P.S. 89 in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn.

He also appeared on CBS Mornings, to discuss the nationwide teacher shortage.
