Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Blaze In East Village

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The FDNY was called to a two-alarm fire Saturday in the East Village.

Flames broke out shortly before 3:30 p.m. behind a refrigerator on the second floor of a four-story building on East Ninth Street, fire officials said.

Yakiniku West restaurant on the first floor and three apartments above were damaged, officials said. Five adults and one child were displaced.

"They were confronted with a heavy smoke condition upon arrival on the first floor," one fire official told CBS2's Reena Roy. "We had 25 units operating here with 106 firefighters. There was a lot of overhauling, a lot of walls and ceilings were taken down, too. There's a lot of damage right now."

"When I opened the widow, I smelled like electrical wiring burning and then I saw the trucks arriving, kind of chaotic. Then I saw the smoke obviously pouring out," said a witness. "They pulled a dog out – pretty cool to see."

No injuries have been reported.
