52-Year-Old Woman Found Dead In East Meadow Home

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Nassau County are on the hunt for killer after a woman was found murdered inside her home.

Residents in an East Meadow neighborhood said they're not used to seeing police activity, but especially not for this – the killing of a neighbor, CBS2's Diane Macedo reported Wednesday.

"They had the street closed off from there, from York to Aberdeen all night long," resident Kevin Moore said of the police activity.

Police said the call came in around 4 p.m., when someone found an unconscious female at 1875 Prospect Ave., Macedo reported.

Miriam Bejarano, 52, was found dead inside her home. She lived in the house with her husband, who wasn't immediately located, police said.

"No, we're looking to see all the family that we can find and talk to them," Chief of Detectives Kevin Smith said.

Moore lives right next door.

"I always thought they were nice people. I always just said, 'hi,'" Moore said.

He said the couple has two adult children.

"The kids were really distraught, really upset. It's a crazy world. I never would've thought something like this would happen here," Moore said.

Police were waiting for the medical examiner to determine cause of death, and while they didn't name any suspects they said they didn't believe it was a random act of violence.

Police said there's no history of previous police calls to the house.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.
