SPCA: 40 Dogs Removed From Filthy Home In East Meadow

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police removed about 40 dogs Thursday from a home in East Meadow, Long Island.

Police and the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals raided a house on Powers Avenue in East Meadow. Neighbors had been calling it an "animal house."

"The smell is so bad, and the conditions are terrible," said neighbor Susan Schmitt. "They can't breathe in there."

Officers in hazardous materials suits said inside, they found dozens of dogs living in filth.

"It's a horrible scene in there – animal cruelty," said Gary Rogers of the Nassau County SPCA. "Animal officers who have been doing this a long time have never seen anything like that."

The animals were being cleaned up at the town shelter late Thursday.

The unidentified elderly homeowner could face numerous animal cruelty charges.
