East Hills Looks To Increase Safety After A Pair Of Crimes

EAST HILLS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- East Hills is stepping up patrols and looking for other ways to increase safety after two recent crimes in the typically quiet Long Island village.

In one case, a woman was followed home and threatened with a knife, police said. In another, a man broke into a home, but the burglar alarm scared him away, cops said.

Deputy Mayor Manny Zuckerman told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall there are increased patrols by the Nassau County Police Department, as well as a private safety 24-hour patrol.

In addition, more than 100 residents went to Village Hall to discuss other ways to upgrade safety measures.

"We are reconstituting a security commission, which is comprised currently of eight residents who will be investigating other ways to increase the safety of East Hills," Zuckerman explained. "For example, they will be looking into street lighting, security cameras at the entrances and exits within the village."

Zuckerman said East Hills is a safe place. Crime is down in the village, but one crime is too many, he added.
