Suspect Charged In Attempted Rape Of Woman In East Harlem Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man was arrested and charged Wednesday in the attempted rape of a woman in an East Harlem building earlier in the week.

Justin Ramirez, 22, who is homeless, was charged with rape in the Monday evening incident, police said.

Around 7:15 p.m. Monday, the suspect followed a 31-year-old woman into her building and attempted to rape her as she climbed the stairs to her apartment in a building near 102nd Street and Park Avenue, police said.

Police said the suspect yanked the woman's skirt.

The victim fought off the suspect and he ran off into the lobby, police said.

The 23rd Precinct where the attack happened had seen 23 misdemeanor sex assaults for the year to date as of Tuesday night – a level number over the same period last year.

Police were also searching Wednesday for a suspect they said who they said tried to rape an 8-year-old girl as she was sleeping in her bed at her home at 108th Street and First Avenue in East Harlem.
