Driver Charged Following Crash That Left Pedestrian Dead In Jackson Heights

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A Florida man has been charged in an alleged DWI crash that killed a pedestrian in Queens Saturday morning.

At 4:30 a.m. police responded to 92nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue, and discovered that a male pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

Police said the red Ford Focus struck the man as he crossed the street and then hit a parked car.

"I heard the cars hitting each other. I saw the dead body was right there," a witness named Alex told 1010 WINS reporter Roger Stern.

EMS arrived on the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead.

The 42-year-old driver, later identified by police as Romulo Mejia, and his 35-year-old female passenger were taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition.

Police said Mejia has been charged with vehicular manslaughter with a previous conviction for DWI, criminally negligent homicide, aggravated unlicensed operator and driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction in the past 10 years.

The victim remained unidentified Saturday evening.
