Driver Held After Allegedly Striking 2 Women, Killing 1, On Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A driver was in police custody late Monday afternoon, after he allegedly drove on the sidewalk and hit two women – leaving one dead – on Staten Island.

Around 1:45 p.m., police were called to Cleveland Avenue and Hylan Boulevard, in the Great Kills section of Staten Island. They learned that a 23-year-old man was headed south on Cleveland Avenue in a 2005 Honda Accord when he went up on the sidewalk, police said.

The driver struck Christal Aliotta, 31, and a 20-year-old woman as they walked on the sidewalk, police said.

Aliotta was pronounced dead at Staten Island University North Hospital, police said. The second woman suffered minor injuries and her condition was reported as "stable."

The driver was taken into custody for allegedly driving with a suspended license, and was allegedly in possession of heroin at the time of crash, sources told CBS 2.
